03 Mar Easy Tutorial – How to Draw a Nose?
Everyone is struggling with drawing a nose. But as you will see, it is not such a big deal. Actually, it is quite simple. This little tutorial will show you the whole progress of drawing a nose.
In order to achieve a realistic look of the nose, you will need at least pencils of F – 8B grades. To see appropriate materials for drawing I recommend you to look at my previous blog post describing all my materials for drawing realistic portraits.
The drawing progress is divided in three main steps – basic shapes, basic shading and getting realistic.
Step 1 – BASIC SHAPES
You should always start with defining the basic shapes of the nose – bridge, tip/ball and nostrils. F or HB pencil is perfect to make light and thin lines which can be erased easily in the case you make a mistake.
Step 2 – BASIC SHADING
When you draw a nose, you should create the basic values which gives the observer an illusion of a plastic form. As you can see on the picture there are three main values – dark values (shadows), middle values (midtones) and light values (highlights). Use the lighter grades of pencil (F – 4B) to draw these values by few soft layers.
Step 3 – GETTING REALISTIC
Continue with adding more layers on the previously shaded parts. In this step you can use the darker pencils (4B – 8B) and softly add more values to create the realistic look of the nose. The more soft layers you add, the more realistic look of the nose you get! Do not push on the pencil to achieve darker result immediately. In order to create a smoother realistic look of the drawing, you can use a blender to blend the graphite.
